Safeguarding & Crisis Policy
Version v1.2 — 19 April 2026
Emergency Notice
Lumina Care Therapy is not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent medical or mental health advice, contact NHS 111 or attend your nearest Accident & Emergency department.
Safeguarding Statement
Lumina Care Therapy is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all Platform users, with particular regard to our responsibilities towards vulnerable adults. Whilst Lumina operates as a technology platform and is not itself a regulated health provider, we take our safeguarding obligations seriously and maintain clear protocols to ensure appropriate action is taken when concerns arise.
Our safeguarding approach is informed by the principles set out in the Care Act 2014, the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and applicable statutory guidance including 'No Secrets' (Department of Health) and 'Safeguarding Adults' frameworks. All therapists on the Platform are independent professionals bound by their own professional body's safeguarding obligations.
Designated Safeguarding Lead
Lumina has a designated safeguarding lead responsible for overseeing safeguarding concerns and protocols. Safeguarding concerns relating to the Platform should be reported to:
Email: safeguarding@luminacaretherapy.co.uk
Postal address: Lumina Care Therapy, Office 132, Unit 5, 399–405 Oxford Street, Mayfair, London, W1C 2BU
This mailbox is monitored during business hours. For urgent or out-of-hours safeguarding emergencies, please contact the relevant local authority adult safeguarding team, the police (999), or NHS 111 directly.
Therapist DBS and Professional Checks
All therapists on the Lumina Care Therapy Platform are required to hold and maintain:
- Valid professional accreditation with a recognised body (BACP, UKCP, HCPC, BPS, or NCS)
- A current and valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (or equivalent for therapists based in devolved nations) where required by their professional body or the nature of their practice
- Valid professional indemnity insurance
Lumina reserves the right to request evidence of DBS clearance at any time. Therapists who cannot provide evidence of appropriate clearance may be suspended from the Platform pending review. Responsibility for maintaining compliant DBS checks rests with the individual therapist as an independent professional.
When Confidentiality May Be Breached
Therapy is conducted on a confidential basis. However, both Lumina and the therapist may share relevant information with appropriate authorities without your consent in the following circumstances:
- There is a serious and credible risk of harm to yourself
- There is a serious and credible risk of harm to another person, including a child
- There is a safeguarding concern relating to a child or vulnerable adult under the Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004, or Care Act 2014
- A court order or legal obligation requires disclosure
- The Mental Capacity Act 2005 requires disclosure to protect a person lacking capacity
- A professional regulatory body requires disclosure
Where possible, your therapist will discuss any safeguarding concern with you before acting. However, in urgent situations where doing so would increase risk, disclosure may be made without prior discussion.
Where Lumina makes a safeguarding disclosure to a third party (such as the police or a local authority), we rely on Article 9(2)(c) UK GDPR (vital interests) and/or Article 9(2)(g) (substantial public interest) as the legal basis for processing Special Category data in that context, as well as Schedule 1 of the Data Protection Act 2018 where applicable.
